Welcome to the Court: Your Beginner’s Guide to Pickleball
So, you’ve seen the neon paddles, heard the satisfying pop-clink of the ball, and wondered what all the fuss is about? Welcome! You’ve just discovered Pickleball, the fastest-growing sport in the world.
Whether you’re a former tennis pro or haven’t picked up a racket since gym class, Pickleball is designed for you. It’s easy to learn, incredibly social, and—fair warning—highly addictive.
What Exactly is Pickleball?
Think of Pickleball as a mashup of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong.
The Court: It’s played on a badminton-sized court (about 1/3 the size of a tennis court).
The Gear: You use a solid paddle (bigger than ping-pong, smaller than tennis) and a perforated plastic ball (similar to a wiffle ball).
The Goal: Hit the ball over the net and keep it in play until your opponent misses.
Why Everyone is Playing
Low Barrier to Entry: You can learn the basics in 15 minutes and play a real game the same day.
Less Running, More Strategy: Because the court is small, it’s easier on the joints than tennis, making it perfect for all ages.
The Social Factor: Since you’re standing close to your opponents, the "trash talk" and laughter are part of the charm.
Ready to Play? Here’s Your Checklist:
Comfortable Court Shoes: Good lateral support is key to preventing ankle rolls.
Water Bottle: You’ll be having so much fun you might forget to hydrate.
A Paddle: Don’t buy an expensive one yet! Most local clubs have "loaners" for beginners to try.
A "Can-Do" Attitude: You’re going to miss a few shots, and that’s part of the fun.
Pro Tip: Don't be intimidated by the terminology. If someone mentions a "Dink" or a "Third Shot Drop," just smile and ask—Pickleballers love explaining the game to newcomers!
Rule
What it Means
The "Kitchen"
The non-volley zone near the net. You cannot stand here and smash the ball out of the air. It keeps the game fair!
Double Bounce Rule
When the ball is served, the receiving team must let it bounce once, and the serving team must let the return bounce once before anyone can "volley" (hit it mid-air).
Underhand Serve
No overhead smashing here. All serves must be made underhand and cross-court
